I'm a newbe on Cinelerra.
My system is a dual core with Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 64bit installed.
Until know my experience with Cinelerra is not so positive, most of the time after some actions the program freezes.
I still believe it could be a great program. So I wonder if these problems are common, or is it only me?
Thus anybody has some suggestions?
The project I want to do is the making of a film of my recent vacation to france.
My base material exists of pictures and some short video 640 x 480.
I want to put this all together in a movie 1280 x 720 (HD), so I can show it on VIMEO on HD quality.

Cinelerra crashes when rendering complete
I am a newbie also, so perhaps I misunderstand how the program works. From what I have seen so far, it looks quite good. My system is a dual core with Ubuntu Hardy 8.04 64 bit. I am not sure I have the optimum Cinelerra installed (I have cinelerra4-repack version 20080819. I have been trying some very simple tests using some short .avi clips. After I select a few, I try to Render, selecting both Audio and Video and .AVI as the output. Things seem to be going OK. The estimated ETA counts down to zero, then Cinelerra simply dies and no file has been written.
Is this a bug in the program, or am I doing something wrong?

Use cinelerra-generic instead
because cinelerra repack is a heroine version that works good only with mov and mpeg video.

solution to all the freezes on cinelerra (for me)
I tested Ubuntu hardy amd64 and i386 on different machines. The only way to work perfect is to disable xcb on the xlibs. This disables Compiz to work.
But I found this solution to allow Compiz and composite to work:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxcb/+bug/185311/comments/159
The bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxcb/+bug/185311
I did it, and included into the /ust/bin/Cinelerra script this modifications.
Now I can use it with no crashes and also COMPIZ.
Let me know if you need the libX11.so.6.2.0 compiled for hardy with no XCB support.

my suggestion : maybe you should check the capability of your hardware to run the soft.

Meanwhile I have found the following thread about cinelerra on the ubuntu forum;

Starting with "sudo cinelerra" gives a great improvement.
I still have some problems with rendering;
Rendering with Mpeg 4 works, but I like to render with H.264, this is not working (program freezes)
